FOR ALL WE ARE LOSING

A timelapse film

This time-lapse film was shot in the Atacama Region of Chile in April 2023.

The initial goal of my project was to capture the darkest skies in the world and its environment, emphasizing al the colors of the night: from moonlight to airglow, to the nebulae of the Milky Way.

Witnessing such a pristine sky made me realize the beauty we’re missing and the resources we’re wasting, exarcerbating climate change and increasing environmental impacts.

Thanks for watching!

"For All We Are Losing" is a timelapse film captured during a 10-day journey into the Atacama Desert, home to some of the darkest skies on Earth.

It serves as a visual tribute to the darkness we are gradually consuming and losing, often without even realizing it. Light pollution has increased exponentially, to the point that many people may never see the Milky Way in their lifetime.

This film is a reminder that we are on the wrong path, but it is not too late to change course.

Thanks to the low aerial traffic and the wild landscapes, the Atacama Desert was perfect for this project.
Here the main areas covered and photographed during the expedition:

Val Arcoiris
Monjes de la Pacana
Laguna tayajto area
Salar Pujsa
Machuca area
Guatin area

Given the budget available for this trip, my companions Alessandro, Lorenzo, and I decided to embark on it by renting a 4x4 pick-up truck.

We would load al the necessities: water, food, equipment, and tents, and set out for an 8-day journey in the desert, with the sole objective of reaching the darkest and most interesting landscapes for photography.

The expedition proved to be much tougher than we expected, given the low temperatures, strong winds, high altitude, and dry climate of the area we were in.

Despite all the unexpected challenges, such as road closures due to volcanic activity or the opening of new lithium mines, or the wind making regular activities like cooking more difficult, the trip was a great success, both in terms of photography and the human experience lived.

Between 2011 and 2022, global sky brightness increased by 9,6% per year.

Increasing sky brightness is a sign we are doing lighting wrong. It’s a sign we are using energy inefficiently, wasting money, exacerbating climate change, and increasing environmental impacts.

This timelapse film aims to be a tribute to the disappearing dark sky, a victim of rising light polution. It serves as a stark warning about this global threat, raising awareness of its consequences.
